Part of the Pongol (Harvest Festival) activities included brightly colored kolams on walkways and at doorways. We also saw the traditional cooking and boiling over of rice on an open fire to symbolize an abundant harvest. The rice is then mixed with sweetener to create a dish also named pongol. Another facet of the celebration is the decoration of the cows, so we were able to see cows displaying flower garlands, bells, and brightly painted horns.
